5 Tips to Help You Achieve Your SMART Goals.

SMART Goals5 Tips to Help You Achieve Your SMART Goals.

Well I take it that you have probably all heard of SMART Goals.  These are goals that we set that are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timed.  This form of Goal setting is fantastic it really makes you sit down and strategically plan your goals, because what happens when you fail to plan, it is said that you are then planning to fail.

That being said here are five steps that you can use to ensure that you achieve your Smart Goals.

1. Always, always write down your goal and read it and refer to it several times a day.  I know this seems like a no brainer, but I know sometimes that life gets in the way and you may get caught up in the drama and forget your goals.  Sad as that may seem it happens many of us, I know that I have to remain very disciplined to ensure I achieve my goals.

2. Make sure you break your goal down into achievable bite sized chunks, that you can take some sort of action on daily.  For example say your goal is to do an Iron Man Triathlon in one years’ time.  You must write your goal down picking a Triathlon that you are going to take part in.  Once you have chosen your event you have to break down your training, diet etc into the months, weeks and days until the event.  By breaking your goal into bite sized chunks you will not feel overwhelmed by the task ahead and take your training one day at a time.

3. Setbacks; When you have a setback, you will have to sit down and look at your goal again and determine if your setback will affect the time limit that you have put on your goal, and if this particular event means that you have to alter any of the steps to achieve your goal.  Just take a close look at your plan and adjust it so that you will still achieve your goal.  Never take a setback as a sign that you should give up.  Setbacks usually arise to test our strength and persistence to our desired outcome, so use that wonderful brain of yours to think your way around those setbacks so you achieve your goal no matter what.

4. Visualization, yes that’s right, it’s vitally important that you visualize your goal as if you have already achieved it.  This must be done daily, but don’t make it a chore, make it fun.  Try it first thing in the morning before you get out of bed, last thing at night before you go to sleep and anytime during the day that you can spare a few minutes.  Make the pictures in your head of you achieving your goal as bright and vivid as possible, and let your imagination take over.  Remember most of the objects around us started as a thought in someone’s imagination.

5. Last but by no means least, try to find a role model.  If you can manage to meet up with someone who has achieved your goal already you can basically take a close look at the process they took to achieve that goal and model your own plan so that you will achieve the same outcome.

Well that’s all for now, the steps above help me stay on track with my SMART goals and I hope they will do the same for you.
