NLP or Neuro-lingusitic programming was a system devised by John Grinder and Richard Bandler in the 1970’s in California.  Grinder and Bandler  studied and interviewed successful people, with the aim to understand the processes behind their success.  They then went through their findings looking for any similarities in the strategies that lead these people to success.

They found that successful people thought differently, they frequently focused on their desired outcome, and kept working toward that.  They also found that successful people, spoke differently about their goals and dreams and had behavioral patterns that would help to keep them focused and moving forward toward their goals.

Bandler and Grinder then used their findings to create a system to help people not only achieve more success in their lives, but to also help them with such problems as phobias, depression, habits and learning disorders to name but a few.

Neuro-lingusitic programming is a system that aims to improve people’s lives to achieve desired life changes.  So how can it benefit you?

1. Examine your belief system

First you have to examine your belief system.  What makes you tick?  Everyone one in life moves toward the things that give them pleasure and away from the things that they feel cause them pain.  For example this can cause a problem if you have an individual with a weight problem, who has linked extreme pain to exercise and dieting.  This type of person would find it very hard to loose weight unless they can change their belief systems.  By linking pleasure to a balanced diet and exercise program, and frequently focusing on their desired outcome, and then linking pain to over eating and no exercise, they will achieve success.  Examine your belief systems and see what changes you need to make.  Remember to change any belief system, repetition and practice is the key to success.

2. Change your map

Since birth, human beings map experiences into sights, feelings, smells and sounds. Successful people continue learning and updating their maps. This can be tough since beliefs and associations about existing paths tend to be very strong. So use NLP to help you gently rearrange these associations and improve your map.

3. Choose an anchor

This is a feeling state; a whole new stimulus-response pattern. Discover the specifics of what you want to feel, for instance calmness and confidence. Remember a time when you best felt that way then mentally go back into the situation. As you think about it, remember what you feel, see, smell and hear. At the strongest point of this state, you will start reliving the particular situation. Frequently revisit this place and to get this experience over and over again.

4. Set the anchor

Visit this anchor again; creating a hand gesture that you will associate with the state of mind you want to achieve. Once you have achieved this, find a phrase or a word that best describes this state. Finally, picture a person who positively represents this state. Conduct this process repeatedly. This will help you build a strong anchor that you can use at any time, to bring you into this state of mind. You can initiate the anchor using the visualization, the phrase or the hand gesture. You can even decide to use them all. The key to developing this skill is to keep practicing.

5. Keep learning

Don’t stop learning. There are different learning methods that you can use to make the most of NLP, and here are a few:

• Reading books – Look for eBooks, audio books or traditional in-print books on NLP and read them.
• Watching videos – Videos are great in terms of showing you the exact step-by-step process of doing NLP.
• Attend conferences and workshops – These can help you to learn NLP very fast. These can either be in form of short workshops or conferences running for multiple days where you can learn different NLP techniques.
• Play a game – If you learn best through play, use a game that will help teach you NLP techniques.

6. Network with Others

Through the many methods that you will use to continue learning NLP, you will get to know more people who face a similar challenge to  yours. Network with them and keep encouraging each other to stay focused.

NLP is a great technique that can help you change your life and start achieving some of your life’s desires. This way, you will end up happier and more successful.
